Confused with All the Rules for Using Images Online?
After looking at only a couple of image sites, I realized that it was all too much to remember, and I was going to get confused among all the different sites.
That is when I decided to compile all the information into one document for easy reference and comparing. Then I realized that I am not the only one who could benefit from this information – you could too!
What’s the big deal anyway about image licenses?
Copyright infringement is the big deal! You are building a business, and the last thing you want to do is use an image incorrectly. One lawsuit, and it could wipe out all your hard work, reputation, and income!
That is why it is so important to review an image’s licensing rights BEFORE you use it, and know what you can and cannot do with the image.
For example, some images allow you to use them commercially without having to pay for an extended license, while others do not. Some images may require a link to the website on the page where you use the image. It all depends on the website, and sometimes the individual photographer.
A Quick Reference Guide of 12 Image Websites & Their Licensing Terms

A very good explanation of what is meant by the terms, “standard” and “extended” licenses by one image website. Although each site will vary in their meanings, this explanation is helpful to get a general idea of terminology.
Who will benefit from this quick reference guide?
If you are unfamiliar with good sites where you can obtain “free” stock images (“free” is in quotations, because free doesn’t always means truly free – this is explained more inside the document).
If you are like me, and just want a quick reference document with links and licensing terms. Of course, you can go ahead and look it all up yourself. However, I have already done the work, so if you value your time, then this could save you lots of time in compiling it yourself.
If you are worried about copyright, and want to ensure you are using all images correctly in your business.
