As someone who creates and uses Private Label Rights (PLR), I understand that all the terms for usage can get quite confusing. When you understand PLR and your rights for its use, it can be a great shortcut to creating and selling your own products, online or offline.
Several people have mentioned to me that they do not fully understand what they are allowed and not allowed to do with products that bear these labels. For example, you may see something like this, and wonder what it means:
Resale Rights – Yes
Master Resale Rights – Yes
Private Label Rights (PLR) – Yes
Giveaway Rights – Yes
Offered as a Bonus – Yes
Packaged with Other Products – Yes
Added to Paid Membership Websites – Yes
Added to Free Membership Websites – No
May Publish Offline – Yes
May Sell on Auction Websites – No
So I would like to try to explain this in a little more detail here. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines, and you should always check the specific rights for each product you are purchasing. For example, some products specify a minimum price that you must charge. When in doubt, ask!
Resale Rights (also called Resell Rights):
Resale rights generally means that you can resell the product to your customers. However, you cannot transfer the rights for your customers to sell the product to their customers. In other words, your customers are only purchasing personal use of the product. Some products also require that you purchase separate resale rights, often at a higher price. In most instances, you are unable to edit/alter the content, or add your name as the author.
To confuse things more, I know of two PLR sellers that sell Resale rights to some of their PLR. In these cases, you buy the Resell PLR and then you can sell it as PLR to your customers. Both of these PLR suppliers, however, also sell PLR that you are NOT allowed to resell as PLR, so you need to make sure that you know what you are buying. That is why I always suggest you ask when not sure.
Here are the two suppliers:
Master Resale Rights (Master Resell Rights or MRR):
When you buy a product with Master Resale Rights (MRR), you can sell it AND you can pass on the rights for your customer to sell it too. Master Resale Rights can be sold with the product, or the rights can be sold separately. Again in most instances, you are unable to edit/alter the content, or add your name as the author.
Private Label Rights (PLR):
Products sold with PLR rights allow you to edit the product as much or as little as you want. PLR rights also allow you to add your name as the contributor or author, but there can be some specific rules to follow. For example, some PLR providers recommend you use the wording, “Compiled by: Your name” or “Presented by: Your name”, in cases where you choose to modify little of the original PLR product. The reason for this is just to preserve the integrity and reputation of all those using the product.
You can also add your affiliate links. You can change a text product into an audio (MP4) product or a video. You can break parts of an article apart, and use the parts to post on Twitter. You can take images, and create an image that gets shared on Pinterest. These ideas are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more things you can do with PLR.
You can resell a PLR product with your name on it to your online or offline customers, BUT you cannot resell the product or parts of it as a PLR product. In other words, if you find my PLR products (or that of any other PLR provider) being sold on another site as PLR, it is being done illegally.
Products with giveaway rights allow you the opportunity to give them away for free without editing the content and by keeping the original author’s name intact. The intention of using products with giveaway rights is to build your list, and/or increase visibility and traffic to your site. Some products with giveaway rights also allow you to brand the report with your affiliate links. For example, I have a few reports here that you can use in that way: http://www.theonlinechick.com/content-you-can-republish/. If you look at any of them, you will see that I have also included the option that you can sell the report, but my name must remain on the report and the content cannot be edited.
Example: “You Can Sell This Report Or Give It Away, But You Can NOT Alter This Report In Any Way”
For some other great PLR providers, be sure to check out a listing that I have begun that includes quality PLR providers. I am adding to it from time to time when I get a chance, so be sure to check back:
